Berching is a really neat town about 17 kilometers from us (or 10miles). It is a walled medeival town. The first recorded settlement was in 883 so it's over 1100 years old! The older part of the city (or altstadt) is surrounded by a wall with towers that was RE-built in 1305. (don't know the date it was first built). Apparently one of the towers has been turned into a six story apartment! Wow! I'd love a tour of that!
Right outside the town walls of Berching is the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal (Rhine being 'river'). This canal connects the Main and Danube rivers. The canal was first attempted in the 700AD time by Charlemagne but was abandoned and then King Luwig I successfully completed that section of it in the 1880's. It was abandoned again after damage by WWII but then was completed in 1990 successfully connecting the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the Baltic Sea. I apologize if this isn't completely accurate I'm trying to learn more of the history of it.
We later discovered the canal goes right past where we live, through a town called Dietfurt. It is our neighboring town where we do our 'on the economy' grocery shopping and such and is only about 7 km, or 4 miles, from the house. We also recently learned we can take a cruise down the river TO berating (or wherever) from here! Ohhh how we're looking forward to spring/summer next year!! =)
There isn't a whole lot to DO in Berching other than walk around and site see. But the old buildings, small cobblestone streets and historic wall are well worth the sight seeing! We did find a backerei und konditorei (which means bakery and confectionary) that was serving ice cream (family tradition over here!). And we saw the maibaum, in english, maypole, in the city center so the must host fests there (as all towns in germany seem to! haha) There was a museum but it wasn't open. Apparently a composer, Christoph Willibald Gluck was born here. I believe we saw his house and that was a museum as well. He was acutally born in Erasbach but it is now the district of Berching.
Overall it was a Gute Fahrt (in english.. good trip!) =)
